Clayton Academy is an independent elementary and middle school committed to providing children a well-rounded education through customized teaching in small group settings. Built upon the theory that every child learns differently, academy educators tailor programs to meet the specific needs of each individual child. Accordingly, a goal of Clayton Academy is to ensure that each child is provided with the opportunity and appropriate tools to reach their fullest potential. Children ages five through fourteen learn how to tap into their unique abilities and gifts in a carefully designed developmentally appropriate environment unique to Clayton Academy.

Attributes unique to Clayton Academy include:

  • Class Size – 10 Students or less
  • Classroom/Teacher Ratio – 10:1
  • Specially Designed Classrooms – Classroom designs are tailored to engage and maintain children’s attention.
  • Schools Attuned – The Academy is the only school in St. Louis to embrace and offer this nationally renowned program specifically designed for children who learn differently.
As Clayton Academy recognizes that some children process information in a manner contrary to what is commonly accepted as the norm, the Academy will not allow children to become victims of unfair and incorrect labels, and most importantly, it does not allow to give up on themselves. To that end, Clayton Academy was built upon a developmentally appropriate program aimed at helping these children perform at their fullest capacity, ultimately preparing then to graduate middle school with the tools they need to excel at many diverse high schools including Clayton; MICDS; Whitfield and Horton-Watkins.

Developmentally Appropriate Environment
Developmentally appropriate speaks to the critical need to treat children as individuals, recognizing children’s changing capabilities and fostering faith in the ability to develop and learn. Through specially designed classrooms and curriculum, the Academy captures children’s attention and directs them to learn in ways appropriate for them as individuals. Some elements unique to Clayton Academy’s developmentally appropriate environment. 
Such specialization reflects current research and proven techniques, further supported by the Academy’s recent adoption of the revolutionary "Schools Attuned"program. The philosophical and methodical marriage between Clayton Academy and Schools Attuned serves to further strengthen the Academy’s approach to providing a foundation for defining high quality early childhood and adolescent programs which children of all abilities feel loved, valuable and competent.
